Introduction to Lactate Measurement
Lactate Testing
Lactate is a metabolic product that can be measured by taking a drop of blood at a finger tip. The blood lactate level increases with exercise intensity and shows clearly the transition from aerobic to anaerobic activity. With lactate testing your training zones are based on the exact concentration of lactate at certain exercise intensities and the corresponding heart-rates, power outputs and speeds. These are different for everyone. Lactate is the unique metabolic variable that indicates the capability of the muscles for an athletic performance. It is unique because no other metabolic parameter provides the same information. Since lactate is produced in the muscle and varies according to the effort level, it reflects what is happening in the muscle. The production of lactate tells us how much the anaerobic system and the aerobic system is involved. So, the amount of lactate in the blood and the corresponding work effort are an indication of how well each of these systems is developed.
This test is similar to the VO2 test, but with slightly longer periods of time between changes in workload. This test does involve several blood samples taken from the finger for the assessment of blood lactate. It is not considered a maximal test but does require a high intensity effort. Results of testing include Lactate Threshold and correlations to heart rate, power and speed.

RESULTS of Lactate Measurement Tests
Your Lactate Measurement Report provides the following measurements:
- Lactate Threshold
- Watts / Power Output For those using a power meter or CycleOps
Indoor Cycle, wattage is monitored, giving you a direct power correlation to all
results. This will assist in creating power training zones.
- Heart rate is monitored, giving you a direct intensity correlation to all results.
- CONSULTATION The data reports from the test will be discussed with you in detail. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. This will ensure that you understand the information.

The Test
Wear moisture wicking, comfortable, sport specific clothing
A heart rate monitor will be worn (provided or you may use your Polar T31 strap)
After the test, you will receive immediate reports and results.
You may be tested on your bike. Bring your bike, gear & water bottle. Please clean your bike. Mountain bikes must change out rear tire to a slick.
You may be tested on a CycleOps stationary bike. Bring your gear & water bottle. The stationary bike
has standard toe cages. You may bring your own pedals.
You may be tested on a treadmill. Bring your running gear and water bottle. Please clean your shoes. Treadmill test REQUIRES a slight jog or running for fit individuals. Sedentary and inactive/low active individuals may walk.
You will start easy, increasing workload by 20+ watts every 3-minutes. Before each load, heart rate and blood lactate measurement (finger prick), will be taken. You will continue until there is a break point in your blood lactate values. This break point area is known as your lactate threshold.
